About the Artist
Rachel Chandler is a professional medical illustrator who received Master of Science in Biomedical Visualization from the University of Illinois Chicago, one of the four accredited Medical Illustration programs in North America. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Biology with Honors and a Minor in Chemistry from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. For her Master's Research, she worked with paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno at the University of Chicago Fossil Lab to visualize the newly classified Pachycephalosauridae dinosaur species Mykocephale. She created a model and animation of the dinosaur and its cranial anatomy that corroborated evidence the specimen is a uniquely small adult and not a juvenile. In her spare time she enjoys all manner of outdoor activities including rock-climbing, hiking, and really good books.
Rachel Chandler current works at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee as the director of the Vanderbilt Biomedical Illustration Core. She owns RC Biomedical Visualizations which specializes in medical and scientific art including illustrations, models, and animations. She is passionate about utilizing her science expertise and artistic skills to make the life's work of scientists, surgeons, and other medical professionals into beautiful, educational visualizations.
Skills & Qualifications
In addition to being a trained scientist, Rachel is proficient in the Adobe Suite, Autodesk 3d Studio Max and Mudbox, Osirix, Materialise Mimics, Pixologic Zbrush, and Visual Molecular Dynamics.
Research & Affiliations
Rachel is affiliated with the University of Chicago Fossil Lab where she completed on her Master's Research Project. She is a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators, the Society for Vertebrate Paleontology, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and a former member of the Student Association of Medical Artists where she ran the Twitter account for the Social Media Team.
